MLB The Show 26 Retro Lightning May Update: What You Need to Know
The MLB The Show 26 May content cycle is in full swing, and with it comes the new Retro Lightning collection — a high‑stakes, high‑value way to snag some of the best Diamond Dynasty cards the game has to offer. This cycle pairs the regular Monthly Awards with a Legendary/Flashback style reward, giving players both a “regular” Lightning card and a harder‑to‑get Retro Lightning version. If you’re grinding toward these top rewards, here’s a clear breakdown of how this all works, what the rewards are, and what it costs to chase them.

The Headlining Rewards

In this May/April cycle of MLB The Show 26, the spotlight cards and Lightning rewards have generated a lot of buzz:

Chipper Jones (94 OVR)

The first big Retro Lightning reward coming out of this May cycle is Chipper Jones. His Diamond Dynasty card sits at 94 overall and, as a standout third baseman with elite hitting attributes, he’s considered one of the most coveted Retro Lightning rewards so far.

Elly De La Cruz (94 OVR)

As the regular April Lightning reward, Elly De La Cruz continues to be a favorite among players thanks to his massive contact and power numbers at shortstop. This version of De La Cruz dropped as the primary Monthly Award card for April, and it remains a strong pickup for offensive firepower on your squad.

The May Setup

The Retro Lightning program that launched in May follows the usual cycle where weekly or periodic May Spotlight drops feed into both the regular Lightning and Retro Lightning collections. The first drop toward May’s Spotlight series went live around early May, and these Spotlight cards are what you’ll need to collect to make progress toward the next Retro Lightning reward.

How to Unlock Retro Lightning Cards

Unlike the regular Lightning cards that you can unlock through free gameplay and program progression, Retro Lightning cards require collecting a bunch of specific cards — and that’s where the grind (or money spent on Stubs) comes into play. Here’s how the unlock path works:

Collect Spotlight Cards

To secure a Retro Lightning card like Chipper Jones, you need to collect a set number of Spotlight Series cards for that period. For April’s Retro Lightning, that number was 16 Spotlight cards tied to the April Spotlight program and associated packs.

Milestone Rewards Along the Way

Some collections also offer smaller bonuses as you build toward the final reward. For example, in the April collection you could get rewards such as Spotlight packs once you hit certain milestones in gathering cards. In past Spotlight collections, milestones like collecting 5 cards might give a pack, and 10 cards could unlock something like a 93 OVR Spotlight player (example: Jose Soriano from the April cycle).

May’s Path

The May Spotlight tracker, tied to Retro Lightning progression, typically requires collecting a subset of the May Spotlight Series cards — current tracking suggests around 11 specific cards are needed for May’s first Retro Lightning push, including players like Mickey Moniak at 93 OVR. These cards come from each week’s new Spotlight drop throughout the month.

Keep in mind that once you collect a card toward these collections and it becomes “locked,” you generally can no longer sell it on the market — so plan accordingly if you’re buying cards to fill the set.

Market Impact and Stubs Cost

One of the most talked‑about aspects of Retro Lightning collections is how expensive they can be in terms of Stubs — and for good reason. Here’s what players are seeing in the market:

High Premium on Retro Sets

Retro Lightning collections (like the April version for Chipper Jones) are not cheap. Community Market data and collection trackers put the total Stubs cost typically well into the hundreds of thousands, often pushing past 500,000 Stubs if you’re buying required cards off the market instead of earning them.

Price Fluctuations

Prices for base Spotlight cards can swing wildly depending on supply and demand. When a Retro Lightning card is announced or teased, Spotlight cards needed for that set usually spike in value — traders buy them up early to complete collections before prices rise further. However, there are temporary dips when Studio drops new packs or free reward cards through standard programs and events, which adds supply back into the market.

From a player’s perspective, it often becomes a balancing act: buy early in anticipation of future collection demand, or wait for potential price drops tied to new pack releases. Both strategies carry risk, but if you’re set on locking in cards like Chipper or future Retro Lightning rewards, having Stubs on hand and tracking the market closely can help you time your purchases better.
